Vinyl is the material that cares least about salt air. This calculator prices it properly for Coronado — style, height, gates, wind loading and the old fence that has to come out first.
Vinyl costs more than wood up front and less over twenty years, which is the whole argument for it on a coastal lot. Published figures for this market put vinyl fencing at $36 to $72 per linear foot installed. What moves you inside that band is the panel style, the height, and how much wall thickness and reinforcement you buy — a cheap vinyl fence and a good one look identical on the day and very different in year eight.
Ranch rail is the cheapest thing here and privacy panels the most common. Semi-private and lattice-top sit above privacy because they combine two panel types in one run.
The single biggest quality difference in vinyl, and the one you cannot see. Thicker extrusions and aluminium-reinforced bottom rails are what stop long panels sagging in the sun.

On the coast, usually. Vinyl costs roughly 10 to 20 percent more than a comparable cedar fence up front and then needs essentially nothing — no staining, no rot, no rusting fasteners, no replacing the bottom board. Over a twenty-year horizon it is normally the cheaper fence. Where wood still wins is on look, on repairability, and on the ability to build any shape you like.
Modern vinyl fencing is UV-stabilised and holds up well; the problem is real but it belongs to cheap extrusions rather than to the material. What to check is the wall thickness and whether the manufacturer offers a transferable lifetime warranty. On Coronado the sun is less punishing than inland San Diego, which helps.

This is the single most common failure we see in vinyl, and it is always an installation decision rather than a material one.
The California Building Code exempts fences under 7 feet from a building permit. Coronado zoning allows up to 8 feet in a required side or rear yard and 4 feet in a required front yard, with specific exceptions. So a 6-foot vinyl privacy fence in a back yard typically needs no permit, and a 5-foot fence across the front of the same house is a zoning question. Confirm with Coronado Community Development.
Individual panels and rails can be replaced, which is one of vinyl's practical advantages — you are not refinishing a whole run to make a repair blend in. The one thing to plan for is colour: a new white panel next to a fifteen-year-old one will read slightly different for a while, though vinyl weathers far more evenly than wood.
